Letter: Why Didn’t Councillor Speak in Debate?

From George Potter

Lib Dem borough councillor for Burpham

Cllr Richard Mills [Con, Castle] didn’t utter a word in the debate on Wednesday, something that was true of most Conservative councillors. In fact, more Lib Dem backbenchers spoke in the debate than the total number of Conservative speakers.

Similarly R4GV councillors remained utterly silent with the exception of their group leader.

Yet when it came to voting the numbers spoke for themselves. 27 councillors voted for three unitary councils, whereas just eight (seven Conservative and the R4GV leader) voted for two unitary councils.

Strange, isn’t it, that Cllr Mills can manage to write a letter to The Guilford Dragon NEWS yet couldn’t be bothered to speak a single word in the council debate.

Of course, had The Dragon, or any other media outlet, actually bothered to report on the substance of the council debate, then readers might actually have some idea of the issues discussed, and the reasons why it is in fact the county council’s proposals that lack all financial credibility.

But, once again, our press is more interested in reporting political tittle tattle than actually informing people about the decisions being made in their name.
