Letter: Will E-Bike Prices Put People Off?

In response to: E-Bikes for Hire Arrive in Guildford

I would be fascinated to see the business model for this scheme.

I calculate that if one bike is used for six hours each day it would earn over £25,000 per year. This is surely an outrageous return.

It may be that the price of £5.80 for 30 minutes puts off potential users. This may well be more expensive than using a car!

Of course if the price were reduced to say £1 per hour many more people would be encouraged to use these bikes and save the world.

This charge would still earn a bike £2,000 per year if used for 6 hours each day.

Surely you need to know the capital, and expected running costs, of the scheme before you can make that judgement.

What? Carry out a potential user, cost and need analysis? How novel!

I think it’s the lack of any cycle routes and dangerous drivers that will put people off, not the price.
