Letter: Will We Show That We Can Work Together for a Better Guildford?

In response to: The Dragon Says: Out of Touch, Out of Reach, Out on Their Ear

I would like to thank The Guildford Dragon NEWS for giving the people of Guildford a voice over the years and not being afraid to comment on or question what it sees. I would also like to thank all those who have used that voice over the years.

Some of those voices now have a seat in the council but we all have a chance to get on our feet and make a real difference to this town. Whatever our political views on national issues we must show we can work together on local issues.

I am sure we have all had times when we felt like fools whistling in the wind. It was always easy to assume that true blue Guildford would always vote in a true blue council that would only ever listen to itself. But still we wrote in and spoke at council meetings, pointlessly, it seemed, banging our heads against a closed door.

Of course, for every controversial issue there were dozens of good works being carried out at Guildford Borough Council. For every uncompromising councillor there were many listening and championing local issues.

And we must not forget that the problems of last week remain. There are massive financial problems at the council, we have developers eager to transform the town, people who can’t afford homes.

But a door has opened.

In four years time we will be the ones who will be judged. Will we crumble under the problems facing us?  Will we turn in on ourselves?  Or will we show that Guildford is a town where people from all backgrounds can work together with good humour, respecting each other’s differences and united by the fact that Guildford belongs to us all?
