Lido Pool Covers Are Proving To Be a Success

Long-awaited pool covers have been fitted to the iconic Guildford Lido 17 years after they were first proposed, to cut costs and save energy.

Installed in March 25, the covers are proving to be a sustainable improvement to the open-air pool, and making it cheaper to heat by reducing evaporation and heat loss.

The initiative comes at a time when gas and water bills are particularly high, although the Friends of Guildford Lido have called for pool covers since 2009.

The project was supported by a grant from Guildford Borough Council (GBC), which has invested in the Lido for several years, and has pledged nearly £10 million for upgrading leisure facilities across Guildford.

The pool is covered overnight, and the pool operator, Freedom Leisure, has committed to having three staff on hand to operate the cover for safety reasons.
