Guildford boy Sasha Dow is half Russian by birth and feels a sense of duty to help Ukrainians who are suffering as a result of Putin’s widely-condemned policies. In total, he has recently raised £420 for various charities.
Yesterday (October 31) the 14-year-old, a schoolboy at George Abbot School, performed in Guildford High Street by the Flying Scholar statue outside M&S at the foot of the High Street between 11am and 2pm singing a wide repertoire of pop and classical numbers.
His mother is a consultant gynaecologist so Sasha decided to divide the money, donated by those who clearly appreciated his singing, 50-50 between the Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal – DEC and Endometriosis UK. Along with other gynaecologists, she treats many young and middle-aged women with this often life-changing condition.
Sasha’s father is also a doctor who works as a consultant anaesthetist.
With his first performance at the age of six, Sasha’s musical career started when he performed solo at Haslemere Music Centre and has had weekly singing training ever since. He became a chorister at St Thomas on the Bourne Church in Farnham at age seven. He is now deputy-head chorister and holds a Royal College of Church Music, Dean’s and Bishop’s Award.
Sasha has toured in Germany, Belgium and Italy with the St Thomas choir and has performed in many venues including St Marks Basilica in Venice and Cologne Cathedral.
He started street performing this year with his chorister friend George Spencer, also a St Thomas chorister and they can often be seen on the weekends making music in Guildford and Farnham centres. They enjoy raising personal funds but also wish to be able to perform for good causes and to give something back.
