A Guildford mum who enjoys running and keeping fit is setting up groups aimed at helping others who want to get fit, particularly those aged 50 and over.

Lynsey Brown is aiming to others get fitter.

Lynsey Brown is aiming to help others improve their health and fitness.

Lynsey Brown found that with looking after her young children and her husband working long hours she found it difficult to attend regular exercise classes. However, she took part in her local Race for Life two years ago completing the distance in 40 minutes. It gave her the taste for running and she has been able to fit that into her busy daily lifestyle.

She said: “I did Race for Life again this year and I got my time down to 24 minutes. I have also been doing half-marathons and edurance running events.”

Now she wants to pass on her fitness and running tips to help others who want to get fitter.

Lynsey will be hosting three groups – two at Bannisters field, Egerton Road, opposite the Guildford Tesco store; with a third on Bellfields Green, off Hazel Avenue.

Her group called Run Active Guildford is aimed at people aged 50 and over. It will initially meet for six weeks and will be an introduction back to fitness. It will lead to further courses to help people improve their fitness by jogging.

Lynsey said: “Run Active Groups will meet for six weeks on Bannisters Field on Tuesdays at 9.30am, from July 5 at and on Bellfields Green on Wednesdays at 9.30am, from July 6.

“Each week we will work on improving endurance and fitness levels and from September there will be a chance to join what is known as a ‘couch to 5km programme’, with a special graduation at the end of our 10-week course.”

Lynsey Brown has improved her own fitness and now trakes part in running events.

The ‘couch to 5km’ programme is designed to ease people into exercise if they have not been active for some time. It starts with gentle exercises and helps them adjust thereby increasing their fitness levels that leads to running.

Guildford Borough Council has provided some funding to help Lynsey get the project going.

Her third group is called Westborough Warriors and is a free running group aimed at beginners of any age and will meet at Bannisters field on Wednesdays at 10.45am (after the Run Active Group).

She said: “We will also start with the ‘couch to 5km’ type programme and work up to running. I hope that over time we can set out routes and explore the local area. We will always have a tail runner so any new members who join much later won’t ever be left behind. We will always use Bannisters field as a base, so will have sessions which work on intervals and speed work.

“The goal is for us to eventually enter local running races, support each other to accomplish personal goals and targets.”
