Important maintenance work begins this week at Guildford’s Castle Keep and Tunsgate Arch.
The Castle Keep preservation works will re-render areas of stonework that have suffered during the winter months, as well as the removal of plant growth, that is beginning to break up the lime mortar.
A spokesman for Guildford Borough Council said that the castle will remain open to visitors during the work. Scaffolding will be in place on all four external walls. The work will take eight weeks to complete, weather permitting.
At Tunsgate Arch, work will include painting and decorating of the interiors followed by specialist cleaning of the stone arch and columns. The flower stall and bread stall will remain open during the work that will take place during evenings only and last approximately 10 days.
Cllr Gordon Jackson, lead councillors for economic development, said: “These works are part of our commitment to invest in the preservation of historic sites across the borough. The work to the castle will ensure it is open for visitors to enjoy and explore. The improvements to Tunsgate Arch will give this town centre site a bright look.”
