A man died last night (early hours of Tuesday March 12) as the result of a house fire at 49 Ludlow Road, off Madrid Road.
A spokesman for Surrey Fire & Rescue Service said: “We were called at 2am to a semi-detached house in Ludlow Road. We sent five fire engines, three from Guildford and two from Godalming. The house was quite badly damaged. Four firefighters with breathing apparatus and hose reels were sent into the house.”
A man, believed to be elderly, was discovered dead at the scene. One report states that he had suffered a head injury. It is not known if the head injury, smoke inhalation or another factor was the cause of death.
A spokesman for the ambulance service said: “We received a call at 3am from Surrey Fire & Rescue and attended the scene in a car and an ambulance. One person was pronounced dead at the scene at least one other, affected by the same fire, was taken to the Royal Surrey County Hospital by ambulance to have their condition checked.”
Today there were few outward signs of a fire at the address. A neighbour, confirming that the fire had occurred at number 49 said that she had been advised not to talk to the media.
An investigation is under way.
