The Guildford Branch of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community is seeking nominations for local heroes who have helped others during the pandemic.

Nominations are welcomed from across the boroughs of Guildford and Farnborough, which encompasses the local branches’ membership boundary.

The Big Mercy for Mankind Thank You Awards will take place as a live online broadcast on Friday, February 26, at 7pm.

It will be attended by guests including the leader of Guildford Borough Council, Joss Bigmore; the Mayor of Guildford, Richard Billington, and the Mayor of Godalming, Penelope Rivers.

The president of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, Guildford branch, Khalid Bhatti, said: “Our community takes its inspiration from the example of the founder of Islam, The Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him).

“He has been referred to as the “Mercy for all the Worlds” in the Holy Quran and indeed this was reflected in his teachings and practice. He is reported to have said: ‘One who is not thankful for a little is not thankful for a lot and one who is not grateful to people is not grateful to God’.

“We as Muslims want to fulfil our obligation to recognise and give thanks to the wonderful members of society that have carried out wonderful acts of kindness during and despite the current pandemic situation. However, we really need the community to get behind this event and put forward their nominations for their local heroes.”

The organisers of the event are keen to involve all members of the local community and urge people to register for the free live event and to submit nominations. Click here for details.

Nominations can be for an individual or an organisation – there will be a separate award for each.

During the live event on YouTube, the organisers will be highlighting some of the many exceptional nominees that have been put forward for the award, as well as announcing the winners of the two awards at the end of their broadcast.

The deadline for nominations is Monday, February 15.
