Residents of Ash have been invited to enter a competition in which they suggest a name for the new road bridge crossing the railway line.
The competition, in which there will be a prize of a £50 voucher for the winner, is organised by Guildford Borough Council and the developers, Volker Fitzpatrick.
The announcement for the competition states:“Ash has a rich history, a diverse environment and a great community. To celebrate this, think about historical events or people, plants, trees or animals, what goes on in Ash.”
The winner will be announced in September and invited to the opening ceremony of the newly-named bridge.
The bridge is due to open in October 2024, with the project completion date set for February 2025.

I am not a resident of Ash, but having read all the comments over the last few years may I suggest (tongue in cheek) that it is named ‘The White Elephant Bridge’

Equally tongue in cheek but written with feeling, some of the suggestions/comments on local social media…
The Viking Bridge – rape and pillage of the village
A Bridge Too Far
Bridge Over The Wild Meadow
The Small Unremarkable Concrete Bridge
The Bridge of Lies.
Deers Leap, as it has destroyed their habitat
Ash Dieback
Bridge of Sighs
Bridgerton
Prince Harry Bridge
The Gypsy Bridge
Bridgey McBridgeface
The Finally bridge
The most neutral being ‘The Ash Bridge’
Should GBC and the contractor have saved themselves the prize money?

It’s great to have a bridge to replace the horrible level crossing which you can be stuck at for ages.

Is it really ages or is it just a few minutes?
I could never understand why it justifies a bridge.

I agree with Mr Harrison. It can’t be more than a few minutes, can it? Probably no more time than at the crossings outside Littlehampton whether at Ford or on the Lyminster Road and people seem to live with those delays.
Also, I can’t help noticing that the contractors are Volker Fitzpatrick who I take it must have some connection with Volker Laser who built the new Walnut Bridge for GBC. Happy to be corrected if I’m wrong.

How about naming the new road bridge as the Jokers Bridge because so many of the suggestions and comments that have been put forward are hilarious and so apt at the same time. One could even adorn the new construction with smiley emojis but that would be a bridge over troubled water.
Crucially I hope that Ash Road Bridge can carry the weight of transportation on it’s shoulders and as for naming the new bridge any of the above are worthy contenders in my view.
