GBC Leader Joss Bigmore wasted little time in removing Cllr Jan Harwood as deputy council leader and as a member of the council’s Executive this morning following Harwood’s move to the Conservative party from the Liberal Democrats yesterday afternoon (November 3, 2021).

In an email from John Armstrong, democratic services manager at the borough council, members were told that Cllr Harwood had been removed from those positions “with immediate effect” and that: “The Leader will notify the Council of the make-up of a new Executive for the remainder of this administration as soon as practicable, and this will be reported formally at the Council meeting on 7 December.”
The email also informed councillors that an item on next week’s agenda for the Overview & Scrutiny Committee had, as a result of the announcement, now been withdrawn. Cllr Harwood was due to answer questions as the lead member for Climate Change.

There are several articles and comment pieces on the move by Jan Harwood.
I seem to have missed the invitation to Jan Harwood by The Guildford Dragon NEWS to explain his decision and reasons for changing party.
Editor’s response: Cllr Howard’s response was requested from the outset of covering this story the news. Initially, he pointed out that a short statement was included alongside Cllr Spooner’s but we reiterated our invitation, suggesting he wrote an opinion piece. This he has now done.
