Work has started on installing new state-of-the-art boilers at Guildford Lido as part of its off-season maintenance work.
Freedom Leisure, the not-for-profit leisure trust that manages Guildford Lido, is replacing the existing boilers with cutting-edge technology which, it says, “promises to enhance efficiency, reduce energy consumption, and ensure optimal pool temperatures”.
Guildford Lido, one of the UK’s few remaining original outdoor pools, offering a vibrant and fun-filled space for families, swimmers, and fitness enthusiasts during the summer season.
Open since 1933, Guildford Lido continues to be popular in warmer weather, featuring a 50m heated pool, slides and extensive grounds. Recently a council decision to close the pool in the off-season has been criticised.

The current boiler system, some of which has been in use for over 40 years, will be entirely replaced. This upgrade will introduce new A-rated condensing boilers, each capable of generating 150 kW of power, totalling 600 kW for the facility.
The new system is designed to meet modern energy standards, significantly reducing emissions and improving operational control.
The newly installed boilers will be fully automated, utilising advanced digital controls. The boilers will automatically adjust their output based on the ambient air temperature, switching off or turning down when heating isn’t necessary. This will lead to substantial energy savings by eliminating manual adjustments and preventing unnecessary heating.
In a statement, Freedom Leisure said it is is committed to offering an exceptional experience to its visitors while promoting environmental responsibility.
The statement said: “The new boilers are just one part of a broader plan to maintain and upgrade the facility, ensuring it continues to serve the community for many more years to come.”
