A new meditation group is meeting at St Nicolas Church, at the foot of Guildford High Street over the Town Bridge, on the first Tuesday evening of the month and welcomes people to join them.
The free sessions will take place from 6.30pm in the Loseley Chapel at the church (Bury Street entrance). The next sessions will be on October 6, November 3, December 1, and January 5.
They will be exploring both guided and silent types of meditation.
The organisers of the group are asking: “In our busy world have you ever considered trying meditation?”
And add: “Practised regularly, meditation brings a sense of peace and wellbeing into our life. In practical terms, this means a reduction in stress, better physical and mental health and greater efficiency in our actions.”
They offer some tips on how to meditate…
Sitting is the best position. Lying down makes you too relaxed and you may fall asleep, standing up, you are doing something. So, sitting down is the balance between contemplation and action, between being and doing.
Breath, words or mantra? In secular meditation the focus is often on the breath. When your mind wanders, notice where your mind has gone and then gently but intentionally return to the breath.
Other meditation uses a mantra. This is a significant word or a short prayer that is repeated to give your meditation a focus.
Meditation is very effective when practised in a group.
The organisers add: You are invited to try it, then practise at home and come back to the next session with questions. No previous experience is needed.”
