New Podcast: Alan Turing – Five Guildford Moments

Published on: 1 Feb, 2021
Updated on: 31 Jan, 2021

A new podcast about Alan Turing ‘the father of modern computer science’ and his strong links with Guildford officially goes live on Monday, February 1.

The podcast, Alan Turing –  five Guildford moments, has been produced by Surrey History Centre, based in Woking, and is in conjunction with this year’s LGBT+* history month 2021, its theme being Mind, Body, Spirit.

The podcast is based on extensive research on Alan Turing and his family by Guildford resident Paul Backhouse, the author of Alan Turing: Guildford’s Best Kept Secret, and who is a Guildford town guide and leads walks based on the Turing family and where they lived in the town.

Paul’s research included searching electoral registers and back copies of local newspapers at the Surrey History Centre. In the podcast Paul has selected five Guildford moments in Alan Turing’s life that tell us more about the man behind the genius.

Details about Alan Turing and his Guildford links can also be found here on the Surrey History Centre’s Exploring Surrey’s Past website.

Copies of Paul Backhouse’s book are normally available at Guildford Tourist Information Centre in the High Street or from the Guildford Museum, although both are current closed during the latest lockdown.

*The acronym LGBT+ includes people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, and trans, but implies with the plus sign that queer, questioning, intersex, asexual people, and others who are not specifically identified are included as well.
