An afternoon of pictures of Guildford in the 1950s and 60s, along with some live music from the era helped to raise £610 for the British Heart Foundation (BHF).

The talk by local historian and writer David Rose was at Guildford’s Holiday Inn on Friday last week (October 16). Special guests were the Deputy Mayor of Guildford, Gordon Jackson and his wife Sue.

Once again David delighted his audience with some fantastic vintage photos, giving details of the scenes featured while inviting those in the audience to comment and add their memories.

Following on from a similar afternoon last year, this one was again rounded off by David being joined by musicians Mick Douglas and Johnny Kelly (who were on the local music scene back in the Fifties and Sixties with their band the Crescendos) to play a few songs. They belted out I’m A Believer, Waterloo Sunset, Sweet Home Chicago, C’est La Vie and Let It Be.

In fact, Mick and Johnny are regularly playing together again with a reformed version of the band now called the Rocking Crescendos.

The chairman of the Guildford and Godalming branch of the BHF, Shirley West, thanks David, Mick and Johnny for their contribution, and to everyone who was there and bought tickets for the raffle, and also to Louisa Green and her staff at the Holiday Inn for supporting the BHF.

Make a date in your diary for the BHF’s early Christmas coffee morning on Monday, November 9, from 10am again at Guildford’s Holiday Inn. The event will be launching BHF Christmas cards and gifts. More details from Shirley West on 01483 563071.
