Surrey Community Action is inviting community-spirited residents in Jacobs Well and Worplesdon to
drop into a coffee morning on Monday, March 17, between 10am and 11.30am at Jacobs Well Village
Hall, to find out more about volunteering for their local good neighbour scheme.
Fairwood Helpers, which provides transport for people who would struggle to get to medical
appointments or to get shopping, are looking to extend their service into the Jacobs Well area but
need local people to join them as duty officers and drivers.
Becoming a volunteer driver is easy and volunteers can give as much or as little time as they choose,
as well as decide the days and times during which they are available.
Fairwood Helpers also needs duty officers, who are home-based, to receive calls from clients and to
find a volunteer driver to take the client to their destination using a phone provided by the scheme.
This could be just a few hours a month.
All volunteers are rewarded with the satisfaction of knowing that they are helping elderly
neighbours to live independently for longer. Feedback such as “This is the first time I have been out
for six months” and “What would we do without you? We are so grateful for all you do” makes a
little bit of effort very worthwhile.
