Would you like to become a trustee of the Guildford Institute, an educational charity which promotes and delivers a wide range of social and cultural courses and events to adults in Guildford town centre?
With some longstanding board members retiring, the institute is particularly keen to recruit people with an interest in education – in its widest sense – and with a background in either architecture, building facilities, fundraising or law.
You would join a group of 10 trustees who come from a broad range of backgrounds and the role would be to help the board of trustees steer the direction of the organisation and also to support the very small staff team.
The Guildford Institute operates from a listed building – which it owns – on the corner of North Street and Ward Street. In addition to the wide range of courses, talks and activities, the institute hosts a variety of clubs, societies and a vegetarian restaurant and also houses a library which contains a renowned and unique local history collection.
Originally a mechanics’ institute, which was founded by local tradesmen eager to take the opportunity to learn, the Guildford Institute moved to its present town centre home in 1892. It is a registered charity, operating as a company limited by guarantee and the trustees are also directors of the company. Although trustees are not paid for their work, travel expenses may be met.
The board meets for two and a half hours every six weeks on Thursday mornings at the institute’s premises. Between meetings, trustees may be asked to advise on specific areas or matters of policy.
Prospective trustees can request an informal conversation with the chairman or another trustee and to visit the institute prior to submitting an application. An application pack can be obtained from reception, by telephoning 01483 562142 or by e-mailing info@guildford-institute.org.uk.
More information can be found about the Guildford Institute on its website: guildford-institute.org.uk.
