Travel the Steppes of Central Asia and feel the patriotic heart of Russia beating in Guildford Symphony Orchestra’s concert of evocative, passionate sound-painting by Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov, Borodin and Glinka at G Live, Guildford at 7.30pm on Saturday, November 19.
Conducted by Darrel Davison, the programme will include Glinka’s Overture Russlan and Ludmilla – an earthy and exuberant showpiece of Russian folk music and Borodin’s In the Steppes of Central Asia, composed as a musical tableau in which East meets West.
Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No 2 will be performed by young Japanese pianist Masayuki Tayama, who combines flamboyant virtuosity with great musical communication. Introduced to GSO’s audience in their last Russian concert two years ago, they are delighted to be welcoming him back to play again.
Also included in the programme will be Rachmaninov’s magnificent Symphony No 2, which eventually won the composer his second Glinka Award, a piece he spent months revising before its successful premiere in 1908. The triumph regained Rachmaninov’s sense of self-worth as a symphonist.
Tickets can be booked now via the GSO Box Office on 01483 415847. For ticket prices and further details, visit the orchestra’s website www.g-s-o.org.uk
