Penalties Allow Flames to Weather the Storm

Josh Waller and Mathieu Gosselin goals during penalties and  saves by Justin Fazio on all four Manchester Storm tiebreaker attempts helped Flames edge a 4-3 Challenge Cup win on home ice.

Early first period strikes by Jordan Power and Gosselin staked the home team to a two-goal lead. However, Storm erased it with a pair of replies by Anton Karlsson at 10:23 and  Brandon Cutler about three minutes ahead of period time, making it all square to begin the second.

Despite Flames peppering Storm with 21 second period shots the frame began and ended still with an even split of the four goals.

A 47th minute Cole Sanford strike finally nudged Flames in front again, but a JD Dudek reply just 86 seconds later had it level for a third time and that was how it ended to offer at least a point to each side.

Overtime solved nothing before a two-goal margin during penalties confirmed the result.

Fazio turned away 22 of 25 shots while Even Weninger made 39 saves on 42 his way.

“It was a hard fought game,” said coach Paul Dixon. “I was happy with our performance overall it was pretty solid and great to get a shootout win.”

“We need the Cup points and we look forward to tomorrow where hopefully we are able to get something in Sheffield where we have not won in a very long stretch.”
