Pirbright on Sea? – Go On Smile!

Pirbright Village has set itself the challenge of transforming into the seaside for the Annual Village Fair on Saturday, September 4.

Puzzled locals knew something was afoot when a set of yellow submarine periscopes (cynics might say drain pipes) appeared overnight on the village green recently.

All together now… “We all live in a yellow submarine, underneath Pirbright village green, It’s a sight to be seen… “

The nautical theme for the fair was finally revealed when a Yellow Submarine emerged, complete with the Fab Four peering through the portholes.

With a surf simulator, donkey rides and sticks of Pirbright rock (yes, they really do say Pirbright all the way through) not to mention sandcastles, pirates and a surf shack on the village green, organisers hope to give locals and visitors the feeling of a day trip to the seaside, deep in the heart of Surrey.

A Yellow Submarine finally emerged.

The popular Pirbright Village Fair is back after being postponed twice because of Covid.

Organisers said: “After a tough couple of years everyone is ready for a day out and a bit of fun. Like everywhere, local businesses have struggled and most clubs and societies have been mothballed. So the Sea Fair is all about bringing the community back together, helping local businesses get back on their feet, and helping everyone re-discover what our village has to offer.

“Yes, we hope to raise much-needed funds for our historic church and village hall, but most of all, we want to put a smile on people’s faces.”

Visitors will be able to enjoy a petting farm, dog agility display, traditional games, live music, food stalls, a beer tent, and the ever-popular all-comers dog show.

Pirbright Village Sea Fair is on Saturday, September 4, from 11am to 5pm, spreading all the way from the church to the Village Green.

How wonderful. The villages scarecrow festivals have been fantastic. I’m sure this year’s theme will be enjoyed by all. Well done Pirbright villagers.

Periscopes surely, whoever heard of submarines with funnels, exhaust pipes maybe, but the mop-tops each needed their own view of the outside world.

Editor’s response: Quite right. Thanks for pointing it out. Hope you and others like our amendments.
