This is the latest monthly column on local cycling by the Guildford Bicycle User Group (G-BUG). Its vision is to make cycling in Guildford safer, more convenient and fun. Members share a passion for making the borough more accessible through increased cycling.

G-BUG is taking the first opportunity since the pandemic began to invite people to meet some of our members in person at local events.
We will be on hand to talk about some of the major projects in Guildford that affect walkers and bike riders during the Great Big Green Week, September 18 to 26 2021, a national week of events celebrating action on climate change.
It is the biggest event on climate and nature ever in the UK. Everyone is invited.
There is a lot of Guildford specific issues to chat about including the launch of Town Centre Master Plan to the latest on the Guildford to Godalming Green-way.
Climate change has recently dominated the headlines with scenes of flooding in America, Germany, Belgium and fires in Greece. The landmark UN report on climate change says we need to take urgent action if we are to limit global heating to 1.5°C.
And there is a lot we all can do locally to help.
Zero Carbon Guildford (ZCG) will be opening a hub in the town centre for seminars, workshops and events across a wide range of topics, exploring ways in which Guildford can tackle waste, reduce emissions and improve community well-being.
You can subscribe to their mailing list here to get involved.
Guildford’s Great Big Green Week culminates in a town centre car-free day on Sunday, September 26. Experienced bike riders from West Surrey will be there to lead cyclists on a ride, in and around Guildford.
They will show you the back routes that avoid traffic and cycle alternatives for the school run. You don’t have to be a member to join one of these rides. All levels and abilities are welcome. To register your interest ahead of the event, email info@g-bug.org.
We campaign and work with councillors and officers at Guildford Borough Council and Surrey County Council to ensure the needs of the active traveller are considered in all the major consultations that affect Guildford.
We would love you to get involved and find out more. Come and find us on the day.
