Guildford City (1) 3 Godalming Town (0) 1

By Barry Underwood

With probably their best performance of the season Guildford City beat off the challenge from neighbours Godalming Town to advance to the third round of the Southern Combination Cup.

Right from the off City looked a rejuvenated side following their win at the weekend.

Enjoying a lot of the ball Guildford’s early efforts on goal were from long range that didn’t especially threaten the visitor’s goal.

As the half developed Godalming themselves came more into the game without creating a significant chance on goal. The home side’s passing though was impressive and on 38 minutes City took the lead.

Josh Adjei’s pace allowed him to win a ball in a threatening position. His pass to Kallum Peart saw the striker run into the box where he went down under a challenge for a penalty. Up stepped man of the moment Kai Zini to convert from the spot.

Minutes later Zini nearly added a second when he dribbled deep into the box only to lose control with the goalkeeper advancing on him.

Guildford opened the second period in flying fashion with G’s keeper Stephen Douglas called into action on numerous occasions. His best save was a flying effort from Kallum Peart’s blockbuster.

Kai Zini then forced a fine double save from Douglas to keep Godalming in the game. On the hour the visitor’ s introduced multiple substitutes off the bench in an effort to save the game.

Godalming’s main threat throughout came from excellent corners swinging in under the crossbar but credit to Marvin Wood and City’s defence for dealing with this threat.

It was no real surprise when City scored their second. Jojo Ampah unleashed a low shot from the right that deflected into the far corner off a defender.

A minute later it was three. Kai Zini burst through and shot past Douglas into the roof of the net.

On 86 minutes Godalming had a glimpse of a recovery when City momentarily switched off allowing Cameron Edwin to run through and slide the ball past Wood. But Guildford weren’t to be denied, and they advanced to the next round of the Combination Cup.
