Hedger’s Almshouses in Merrow has installed a garden room where residents can relax and where friends and family can join them.
It has been funded with grants from Your Fund Surrey’s Small Community Projects, Guildford Poyle Charities, Guildford Lions Club and The Mercers’ Company.
An official opening was attended by residents and their guests, trustees old and new, funders, local dignitaries and friends of the charity.
Edward Martineau, who chairs the trustees, gave a short short speech and handed over to Guildford Borough and Surrey County Councillor George Potter (Burpham ward and Guildford East, respectively), who has supported the project.
Treasurer of the Almshouse Association Simon Ling cut a ribbon to formally open the new garden room.
The Hedger’s Almshouses charity dates back to 1797 in south London. It moved to Bushy Hill, Merrow, in 1963 as its London property had suffered bomb damage during the Second World War.
At Merrow, there are eight bungalows offering affordable accommodation for older single women with a connection to Guildford who are able to live independently.
The trustees are always keen to hear from people who may be interested in getting involved, especially from those with professional skills, such as finance and accountancy, or practical experience in housing or caring for the elderly.
