A small area of open space in Northway, Guildford, is having a makeover to the delight of a number of campaigning residents who live nearby.
The triangle of land opposite Stoughton & Westborough Royal British Legion and near to one of the entrances of Stoughton Recreation Ground had become somewhat neglected. The hedgerow that borders it on one side contains a number of dead trees and the grass is a little rough.
Northway resident and local Neighbourhood Watch representative Raineee Wornhan, along with others, regularly conducts litter picks there and also up and down her road. They have campaigned for the patch of land to have a makeover and this week a team arrived to do the work.
Raineee said: “The contractors have started and hopefully it won’t take them long to complete. They are removing the old hedge, putting in wooden posts, a raised bed made of railway sleepers and planting some trees.
“It will all look a lot better – and that’s good because it’s also opposite the legion’s war memorial.
“I would like to thank community safety warden Tracy James who helped us so much in our campaign to get this work done.”
The land having the makeover is owned by Guildford Borough Council. Cllr Sarah Creedy, Lead Councillor for Housing and Social Welfare, said: “This scheme was one of a number identified by local residents during a consultation exercise in 2011.
“The total cost of the works is just over £4,500, funded from the council’s housing environmental improvements budget through the Westborough Works programme. The works are being carried out with the full support of local residents who are keen to enhance their local area wherever possible.”

I would like to say that without the help and knowledge of my best friend Brian Holt this would of not of been possible. He played a huge part in getting this improvement done. We also owe a huge thank you to Tracy James: she truly is a champion and works so hard to help every one. And a huge thank you to Guildford Borough Council for taking this on board and doing the work. I hope other residents and groups see what is possible if you persevere. It is possible to achieve your goals! Never give up the help is out there!!

We have campaign for 5 years to get this area improved opposite the Royal British Legion war memorial in Northway.
Work has finally started, but this is only due to Neighbourhood Watch representative Raineee Wornham
keeping going with me to the end.
Thank you to Tracy James the Community Safety Warden who has work so hard helping us to achieve
this and support from Guildford Borough Council staff, and our County Councillor Fiona White.
I would say to all residents and groups who want improvements made in their area, just keep going until you succeed. And see help from the type of people who help us.
