Schoolchildren’s Artwork Brightens up Chilworth Railway Station

Colourful artwork by children from Tillingbourne Junior School has been installed at Chilworth railway station on the North Downs Line.

The artwork, printed onto vinyl, brightens up the waiting shelter on platform 2 and replaces previous artwork that had become damaged.

Earlier this year, Sara Grisewood, North Downs Line officer for the Southeast Communities Rail Partnership, ran a workshop with a group of children from all the year groups at the school in Chilworth.

The inspiration for the artwork was the beautiful nature around Chilworth railway station, including the rich biodiversity of plants, trees, animals, birds and insects at the nearby site of the former Chilworth Gunpowder Mills, and at Blackheath.

The project was funded by the Southeast Communities Rail Partnership and supported by Great Western Railway that operates passenger trains on the North Downs Line.

The photo shows North Downs Line environment officer Mark Lee (who works with Andrew Gallaugher, North Downs Line senior duty station manager) looking after all the stations on the North Downs Line.

He manages many duties including looking after litter bins, ticket machines, and, more recently, installing the vinyls.

From Chilworth railway station, it is a short walk to the former Gunpowder Mills, a fascinating and wonderful historic site.

On Saturday, September 5, there is an event to celebrate 400 years of the Chilworth Gunpowder Mills, including free guided walks around the site. See poster below for details.
