Cllr Richard Billington’s (Con, Tillingbourne) nomination as the next Mayor of Guildford was confirmed last night (December 4) at the full Guildford Borough Council meeting. The problem of there being no nominee for the position of Deputy Mayor was resolved when Cllr Marsha Moseley’s (Con, Ash Vale) name was put forward and agreed.
Deputy mayors, after serving their year, normally continue to become the mayor.
In Guildford Borough, the role is primarily ceremonial although the mayor also fulfils the important, and sometimes challenging, function of chairing council meetings.
Cllr Moseley, currently the chairman of the Planning Committee, will, unusually, be serving as the deputy mayor/mayor for the second time. She was previously the mayor in 2010-2011. Her partner, Cllr Nigel Manning (Con, Ash Vale), recently served as mayor in 2017-2018.
