Residents in Sheepfold Road, Guildford, have come together growing sunflowers and raising money for charity.
With the flowers now blooming nicely it was time on Tuesday evening (August 13) to present a healthy £1.050 to Shooting Star Children’s Hospices, the charity the residents have chosen.
The idea to grow sunflowers as a competition this summer came about at a new year’s get together some of them attended. The road, off Worplesdon Road in Stoughton / Rydes Hill, has four Neighbourhood Watch co-ordinators and they got the scheme going.
Resident Angie Bates sowed around 250 sunflower seeds, of different varieties, in her greenhouse, and residents the took the young plants and grew them on. The money was raised by them and others making donations.
With about 100 households in Sheepfold Road, nearly everyone responded and grew some sunflowers.
Shooting Star Children’s Hospices’ community fundraiser Ellie Bennett came along to meet the residents and see their sunflowers.
She said: “We are so grateful to them all for their hard work growing the sunflowers and raising the money. With gift aid added on top it will be more than £1,050, and each year we need to raise £10 million.”
The Sheepfold residents set up an on-line Just Giving page, and donations are still very welcome. Click here for The Sheepfold Road Charity Sunflower Competition Just Giving page.
