Shop Front: New Taproom Growlers & Cans Opens In Chertsey Street

Firstly, “what is a growler?” I had to ask when I visited Growlers & Cans.

Growlers & Cans, a taproom and off licence, recently opened at 24 Chertsey Street, Guildford, opposite TGI Fridays.

Before the definition though, Growlers & Cans, a craft beer taproom and bottle shop, has recently opened at 24 Chertsey Street.

It has a really nice feel inside, quite small but it looks like the sort of place where you could get serious about good quality beers and ciders or have a good drink, or both.

Busy evening at Growlers & Cans.

Who better to say what a growler is than Charlie Martin, who co-owns and manages it with his wife and business partner, Max.

Charlie explained: “Well, it’s a US term for a re-usable bottle to take your favourite craft beer home in.

“We see Growler & Cans as a place to come to after work, have a drink and then take your favourite draught home in a growler. It’s a concept that is becoming more and more popular in the UK and now we have one in Guildford.”

It is basic but it does the job. Six draught beers available behind the bar at Growlers & Cans.

It’s a taproom – another definition coming up – which is a room where beer is available on tap, and also an off licence. You can bring your own growler, or buy one on the premises, they will purge it with gas to give it a good clean, and then you take your choice.

Charlie, who is a nut trader, can help you with that choice if you need. He is on the committee for the Guildford Beer Festival so he knows his stuff.

Open seven days a week from noon to 10pm on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 4pm closing on Sunday and 8pm on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, it is getting excellent write-ups on Facebook. Excellent coffee as well.

Definitely worth a visit.

Interesting that the planning application for a similar establishment in what was the Diving Shop in Send faced many objections from other shops (three food orientated) – mainly that it would bring in the “wrong sort of people”!

I popped in and met Charlie last week and the tap room is fab. It’s the perfect place to meet up with friends and choose a new drink to try.

A wonderful place to enjoy a lovely ale or two in most friendly surroundings!
The cellar has been refurbished recently so theres plenty of room for everyone in Guildford’s friendliest hostelry!
