Solar Sisters, a new zero waste food and household goods shop, has just opened up at the top of North Street. It is also a relaxed and comfortable café too where you can get a very nice cup of tea or a coffee and choose from a good selection of locally made cakes.
Run by sisters, Lucy Howard and Nina Clayton, the shop has a Scandinavian feel about it, minimalist and well laid out.
The refill area has a huge selection and they are adding to their stock of foods, pasta, rice, nuts, coffee beans, tea and locally made preserves to name a but a few as well as toiletries and cleaning products.
They want to be as plastic and package free as they can. So you take your own container, fill it up, get it weighed and pay. It’s very simple and quick.
They do have bottles and bags if you forget so you don’t have to worry.
They are real sisters and it shows as they work together in the shop putting the finishing touches to their endeavour. They are both keen to make this concept work as it’s a first for Guildford
Lucy, who runs the Nest Café in Bramley, said: “We’re a business but we want to be plastic free and zero waste as far as we can.
“We have priced matched against a major supermarket and we are very competitive and affordable. That’s important to us.”
Nina said: “We aren’t here to make loads of money but we want to provide an alternative and ethical way to shop.
“We do our best to source locally. All the cleaning products are sustainably sourced in the UK, cruelty free, vegan and biodegradable.”
They are planning to hire someone “very soon” as they want to be busy with workshops, guest speakers, online sales and events in the shop.
It’s new in Guildford, very exciting and another indie for the town. Great news!
Opening hours (subject to change) are Tuesday to Saturday 9:30am to 5:30pm. You can contact the shop online www.zerowastesurrey.com or by phone on 07944 770189.
