Drivers could soon face slashed speed limits on most of the A322 through Lightwater after concerns of fatal crashes.

Surrey County Council is proposing to drop the national speed limit on the dual carriageway between the M3 and Lightwater to 60mph in both directions. The changes would cover one and and a half miles on each side, making it the biggest reduction in the plans.

The move follows a review of crash data which revealed four fatal crashes on the bypass in the last ten years. Council officers say the figures show the roads need to be made safer and are consulting on the speed limit changes. Surrey Police have backed the proposal, according to council documents.

Smaller reductions are also planned at each end of the bypass with 40mph zones on parts of Guildford Road through Lightwater and the first few hundred metres of the bypass itself.

People can view the full proposals online or in person at Camberley Library, Lightwater Library, or Surrey County Council’s Hazel House offices in Guildford. Comments and objections must be sent in by August 14.
