Still Time To Enjoy A Stroll or Ramble With Guildford Walkfest

This year’s Guildford Walkfest is now in full swing, with a variety of free walks on offer until the end of September.

David Rose, local historian, writer and so on, is leading a walk for Walkfest on Friday, September 25.

This is an easy circular walk, lasting a couple of hours, starting from Shalford railway station at 10.30am. No need to pre-book.

En route, with a few stops, you’ll hear a bit of history of the railway in these parts, plus passing Shalford Mill and also passing the house where musician and singer Phil Collins once lived!

All while enjoying views of the Chantries and the surrounding countryside.

Joining David as co-walk leader will be Sara Grisewood, North Downs Line Community office for the Southeast Communities Rail Partnership.

There is car parking at the station (paid), or free opposite on the common by the Scout hut, or nearby side roads.

The Guildford Town Guides have many walks throughtout the festival. This Sunday, September 20, sees its Pottage to Pasta walk.

Food is a part of our everyday lives that has changed enormously over the centuries. What foods were available to Guildfordians in the 16th century? Did the spices brought in by English merchants affect the diet of ordinary people? What impact did the Industrial Revolution have on what our grandparents ate?

This is a new walk from the Town Guides following the ‘Everyday Lives’ theme chosen for Heritage Open Days 2026.

The walk is about a half a mile long with regular stops, and about 90 minutes in duration. Meet at Tunsgate Arch in the High Street for a 2pm start.

On Saturday, September 26 there is a walk from Albury Heath to Shere walk with optional picnic (bring your own) on the heath afterwards.

Join the president of the Surrey Hills Society, Chris Howard, on this lovely walk from Albury down into the picturesque village of Shere, made famous by the film, The Holiday. Option to bring a picnic to have on Albury Common afterwards.

Bird Tweets is the title of a walk around Unstead Nature Reserve on Wednesday, September 30.

Join volunteers for a 10.30am start to learn about this fascinating nature reserve created by locals and now home to lots of waterfowl.

Parking is limited. Take care not to block the entrance to the works or gated entrance to Thames Water.
