There cannot be many people, who have an unbroken run of service spanning 63 years, but it started for Terry Cater after he returned from military service in 1956 and became involved with the cricket and football clubs at Worplesdon.

He went on to serve on Worplesdon Parish Council and the board of trustees of Worplesdon Memorial Hall and Sime Gallery, being chairman for the past 15 years.

On Friday, January 11, the current trustees held a reception for him and his wife Zenda, to celebrate his service to the hall and to wish him all the best in his retirement.

More than 50 people with connections to the hall, including all the current trustees, attended and subscribed to a retirement present, a motorised golf trolley to speed him around the golf course at Puttenham, where he regularly plays.

New chairman Chris Ewbank, who had been elected to replace him only three days earlier, said: “His tireless work and wise counsel will be sadly missed but we shall all be sure to take him up on his offer of advice and assistance in the future as the occasion arises. Terry will be a very hard act to follow.”

The most senior remaining trustee, Mary Broughton, acknowledged Terry’s selfless commitment, wise counsel and unflappable character, in wishing him and his wife all the best on his retirement.

The hall was built nearly 100 years ago and is used by local clubs and societies’ meetings, for business meetings, wedding receptions and children’s and other parties.

The local pre-school also uses the hall and is celebrating its 2018 outstanding Ofsted award. The hall also has a small art gallery dedicated to the work of Sidney Sime, who lived in the village. The sports ground  is used for cricket, football and tennis.

Terry has dedicated so much of his time to the local community for so many years.

He has quietly done so much.

He was a worthy recipient of the Mayor’s Award for Service to the Community and thank you seems far too little to say.

What a wonderful volunteer for Worplesdon.

Thanks to Terry for his service to The Worplesdon Memorial Hall. There can be few people who have done so much for a local charity over such a long period of time. Taking his place is very daunting!

Best wishes to Terry and Zenda
