Coffee shop openings are what we are used to in Guildford these days as the buoyancy of this sector of the retail trade continues, but one finally closed its doors this week, The Garden Room in Sydenham Road.
Slightly tucked away on a ground floor corner of the Castle Car Park it benefitted from the constant trail of passing pedestrians going to and from South Hill.
Those in the know have told The Guildford Dragon that the business has been on the market for a couple of years. But a sale was not achieved and it seems that the owner, who gave her name as Mandy, has decided to exercise her right under a break clause in her lease to give up her tenancy.
Whether there was also an expected rent hike is unknown but she was at pains to stress she had no hard feelings with landlords, believed to be Guildford Borough Council, and said: “I would like to thank all my customers for their loyalty over the last ten years.”
What might be coming next is not known but if you hear any whispers please let The Dragon know.
