English Wine Week, an annual event, run across the country to promote and highlight English wine starts over the Spring Bank Holiday May 28 and runs until 4th June.
Events will be taking place at local vineyards and the English Wine Producers website has a current list of events taking place.
English wine has grown in popularity and is now rightly seen as a premium wine producer with more than 450 vineyards and over 3 million bottles produced a year in England and Wales.
In Surrey we can be proud of our local wine producers who have made the most of the local soil and excellent aspect to produce world-class wines.
International grapes such as Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc grow side by side with local favourites such as Bacchus, Ortega and Seyval Blanc and produce a wide variety of styles from sparkling to crisp fresh whites and fruity easy drinking reds.
So here are three of the very best local wines for you to try which can be purchased direct from the vineyards.
Albury Estate Classic Cuvée 2013 Albury Estate £29.95. This classic cuvée of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier is refreshing and mouth filling a real class act.
Greyfriars 2013 Reserve Rose – Greyfriars £21.00. A delicate salmon colour with a fresh and fruity bouquet. Summer fruit and berry flavours. Made from 100 %Pinot Noir with some of the wine fermented and aged in wood.
Denbies Bacchus Sauvignon 2015 £16.95. First commercial planting of Sauvignon Blanc in the UK has produced a wine with lovely herbaceous notes of cut grass and some fresh citrus fruit equaling a refreshing wine with great length.
