Gypsies or Travellers in Tesco car park

A group of Gypsies or Travellers which had encamped on the Tesco car park off Egerton Road in Guildford, were reported to have left within 24 hours of arrival at around 3pm on Sunday afternoon (October 15).

About a dozen caravans or motorhomes were earlier photographed by a Dragon reader at the car park outside the supermarket which is the main Tesco store in Guildford, close to the Royal Surrey County Hospital.

A spokesperson for Tesco said: “We are aware of the caravans in the car park and are working to resolve the situation as quickly as possible.”

Gypsies and Travellers have previously encamped on the field between Tesco and Egerton Road but, it is believed, this is the first time they have used the car park itself.

The Tesco store remained open as normal for customers.

Cllr Julia McShane

Julia McShane, Lib Dem borough councillor for Westborough, commented at the time the Travellers were still in situ: “As has been reported, Tesco are in the process of resolving the situation as soon as possible.

“I don’t know why this group has stopped here or how long they intend to stay but hopefully someone will have spoken to them in this regard?

“Given that SCC do not provide any transit pitches it is difficult to see how encampments such as these will ever stop.”

One assumes that they will willingly be paying the penalty notice charge for staying longer than the prescribed two hours free parking.
