A procession passed up the High Street on Saturday morning that included the Duke of Kent, who is the university’s chancellor.

Some 140 representatives, that included academics, students and alumni processed to the Guildhall.

After being joined by mayors and councillors from around Surrey, they walked to Holy Trinity Church for a thanksgiving service.

I enjoyed watching the colourful procession of the chancellor, the vice-chancellor, students, academics, mayors, Guildford aldermen and local celebreties.

I showed my Battersea tie (from 1964 days) to some of the people I and my wife (she also worked at the university for some time) met and talked with.

In the beginning Stag Hill campus was a muddy affair with building work still going on (has never stopped since!) when I moved from Battersea to Guildford in 1968.

I worked for six years in Guildford from 1970 with a team designing and building Surrey motorways and trunk roads. I enjoyed my time in Guildford and I still do although no longer live in Guildford but close by.

If you can access the 50-year celebrations forum on Facebook, you can see my videos.

With 14,000 students and 4,000 (a guess) paid staff the University of Surrey managed to muster 140 persons, so maybe it’s time that this unwanted mess of University and Guildford Borough Council needs to sort themselves out and take notice that Guildford wants nothing to do with either as they currently present themselves.

The University of Surrey has brought all sorts of good things to Guildford.

A few students being paid to collect signatures is a tiny glitch in a long history of good things – how ungracious!
