Whitmoor Common Fire

By Martin Giles

It might be only spring, with spring-like temperatures in the mid-teens, but after a few weeks of drier weather, Guildford has already seen its first wildfire of 2026.

Guilford resident Desmond Green witnessed emergency services tackling a blaze on Whitmoor Common yesterday afternoon (April 11).

He said: “It was about 2pm. There were four or five fire brigade vehicles on the common, and three or four police cars in the car park as well as several officers.

“I’d just gone on a walk with my family and then the police told us to quickly evacuate the area.

“The fire was just a short way from the main car park on Salt Box Road. It seemed to cover a large area with lots of smoke and I could see fire flaring up in the trees.”

The Surrey Fire & Rescue Service posted on Facebook yesterday: “We currently have multiple fire service units in attendance at a wildfire on Whitmoor Common, Worplesdon, including two unimogs, three multi‑role vehicles and one pump.

“Due to high winds and changing smoke conditions, we’re asking people to avoid the area. Residents nearby should keep doors and windows closed as a precaution.”

Then at around 6pm they added: “The fire on Whitmoor Common has been resolved. The wildfire affected approximately three hectares (7.4 acres) and is now under control.

“As a precaution, residents are advised to keep doors and windows closed while some smoke remains in the area.. Thank you for your cooperation.”
