Do you recognise on which building this date appears?

A good number of replies to last week’s mystery photos. I think just about everyone recognised the photo that was taken at the bottom of North Street / Friary Street when the furnishing store Courts was there.

Darol Radley recalled that Tesco was once in Friary Street, where TK MAxx is currently. I still refer to the covered walkway, seen next to Courts, and which leads leads down to the river, as the “Tesco Tunnel”.

The other picture was a difficult one indeed. No one correctly identified it as being at about the junction of today’s Stocton Close and Stocton Road, off Woodbridge Road.

The view looks north-east. Click here to view again. You can see the stand that was behind one of the goals at the former Guildford City football Ground. The other end was open and a grassy slope.

So, Joseph’s Road is beyond the football ground in this view. Note the pylon. It still stands and is in the car park of the Europa Park retail centre (Homebase) and close to the rear of the Allianz building.

This week we have just one vintage photo (see below, and don’t worry I’m not running out of them) and a photo (above) taken recently of a date that appears on, well something, in Guildford, and can be seen at all times.

It’s the first of a series of “mystery date” photos that have been taken and sent to us by Richard Bailey. Next week I will reveal where this one is by publishing a photo showing more of the sign, notice, structure, or whatever it is on which the date appears.

By way of a clue to the first one, think of a building with a royal connection!
