Little did members of the local pro-Europe group, Guildford-in-Europe know when they planned a hustings meeting for the run up to the county council elections that a general election was to be called. But that’s what has happened and what some are already calling the “Brexit election” is bound to be a major talking point.

Spokesman David Pillinger said: “…each political party standing in Guildford central [in the county council election] has been invited to field a candidate.

“There will be a focus on Brexit related matters, which are now more relevant than ever to the success of our town, Guildford; a town closely connected to the rest of the world, and in particular to its neighbouring countries.”

Each candidate will speak and then take questions from the audience. The event has been will be chaired by Ian Stewart of Guildford-In-Europe.

Pillinger continued: “During the event, candidates will be questioned on how they propose to confront the risks, if any, arising from uncertainty over Britain’s future relationship with the European Union.

“Of particular interest will be the candidates’ views on how to ensure Guildford’s businesses, academia and research, and the NHS are properly taken care of as we negotiate our way out of the European Union.”

The hustings meeting will take place at: The Guildford Institute, Ward Street, Guildford GU1 4LH, on Tuesday April 25, 2017  from 7.15pm to 8.45pm.

There will be seating for 70 people, on a first-come-first-served basis.

SCC candidates expected are: Conservative: Bob Hughes; Greens: Mark Bray-Parry; Labour: George Dokimakis; Liberal Democrats: George Potter; Peace Party: John Morris; Socialist Party of Great Britain: Adam Buick.

Guildford-in-Europe says it is a grassroots group monitoring and advising on the impact of the negotiations to leave the European Union on Guildford’s businesses, academic and research hubs, and the NHS.

Guildford-in-Europe is rather a strange name for a campaign group. Unless there is a pretty major geographical world change, Guildford will always be in Europe. Look at any map. The European Union, on the other hand, is a completely different thing and we are, of course, leaving that. There is no question.

Perhaps someone should take a map to point out where Europe is and how we are certainly still in it?
