Full marks to those who replied last week – all of whom were correct. You can see all their comments and the extra details they have supplied about the pictures in question by clicking here on last week’s post.
I have to say that this page gets hundreds of views each week now – but it is those who know their Guildford really well who most often reply and seem to come up trumps each week. So well done once again. Should I make the images easier or harder?
For the record, last week’s mystery vintage picture showed the village of Witley and the the coat of arms can be found under Tunsgate. Thanks to those who pointed out there is a similar one in the foyer of Guildford Borough Council offices in Millmead, and another I have learned at Guildford Cathedral, plus Guildford gets a look in at Freiburg too! And why not?
Here’s this week’s vintage picture and a building with a military connection. This building still stands. Where is it and what was it?
Of the quirky picture I am confident that at least one of the regular readers will identify the location straight away – he worked there for a number of years. You should recognise which bank it is – but where is it in Guildford town centre?
If you know the answers, please leave a reply in the box below. The answers, along with the next pair of images, will be published about the same time next week.

Queen’s Royal Surrey Regiment’s Stoughton Barracks, Guildford.
The building can be seen in this video taken before the redevelopment.

I am going to look round for a building with the Barclays Bank crest on the façade. High St maybe?

I think you have made it harder already! No idea where this weeks picture is.
The quirky one I do know – it is at high level above what is now the Post Office at the junction of North Street with High Street. I think Barclays Bank used to be here

The vintage picture is of the Officers’ Mess at the former Stoughton Barracks, now part of the Cardwell’s Keep development.
The spread eagle emblem in the quirky picture is that of Barclays Bank, but it’s to be found not at the present-day branch, but high up above the former branch at the junction of High Street and North Street, next to the Post Office.

I think this building is in Stoughton Barracks, which was formerly the home of the Queen’s Royal West Surrey Regiment, and I think it was officers’ quarters.
It’s at the end of where Monro Drive is now.
The Queen’s Regiment left when it was amalgamated with others units of the Army Management Services Group, and the Management Accounting and Costings Services which used the site until 1983.
The film Carry on Sergeant was filmed there in 1959.
The other picture is on the building at the top of North Street that was formerly a regional office of Barclays Bank, and had once been the head office of the dairy firm Cow & Gate.
Today it is the post office.

It’s Wanborough Manor, used by the SOE (Speedboat Operations Exectutive).
It’s the Barclay’s bank logo above the post office in upper North Street. Barclay’s used to be there but moved to where Cash Homes was about 10 or so years ago.

The eagle is on the tower of Moffats, where the High St curves round to meet North St.
