Guildford’s oldest newspaper, the Surrey Times, is being closed by owners Trinity Mirror, with job losses expected across its southern region.

The Surrey Times was established in 1855, nine years before its sister paper the Surrey Advertiser.

The free newspaper the Surrey Times is being axed by its owners Trinity Mirror. It won't be dropping through letterbox for much longer.

Once rivals in the town, the owners of the Surrey Advertiser acquired the Surrey Times in 1964.

A shadow of it when it was independently owned, for many years the Surrey Times has been a free paper complementing the paid-for Surrey Advertiser.

Trinity Mirror is closing seven others titles in its Surrey and Berkshire stables including the Surrey Herald at Chertsey. Total job losses are expected to be about 50 staff.

Once again, the Surrey Advertiser will adsorb the closed titles with yet another ‘re-launch’ planned for next month to take in the Chertsey and Addlestone areas.
