A burglar is behind bars after stealing a treasured watch from home of elderly lady in Park Barn, Guildford.

Joe Mobey, 45, from Aldershot Road, Guildford appeared at Guildford Crown Court on May 25, 2017 where he pleaded guilty to burglary and was sentenced to three years and four months in jail.

The court heard that Mobey broke into a house in Westway, Park Barn, Guildford sometime between December 10 – 14, 2016 and stole a gold wrist watch. The watch was given to the victim by her late husband and was of significant sentimental value. It has not been recovered.

At the time of the offence, the elderly victim who was in her eighties, was in hospital. She sadly passed away a few days later without returning home and it was only when a family member went to the house that the burglary was discovered.

A forensic examination found some blood at the scene of crime which was linked to Joe Mobey. After handing himself in at Guildford Police Station on January 18, 2017, Mobey was arrested and later charged and remanded into custody.

PC Antony Brady said: “I hope the sentence handed out to Mobey gives some measure of comfort to the victim’s family in what has been a very difficult time for them. Targeting elderly victims in this way really is the lowest of the low and I’m pleased that Mobey is now off the streets of Surrey for a period of time.”

What a despicable man. I don’t care how hard up he is, there is absolutely no excuse for what he did. He has now got a roof over his head for a few years, at taxpayers’ expense. I really despise people like this. Unfortunately, drug use is commonplace within our prisons.

I have to finish writing now because it’s starting to make my blood boil.
