Report by Geoff Sheldon
On the warm sunny afternoon of Wednesday last week (July 21), 100 members of Burpham Bowling Club entertained the Mayor of Guildford, Marsha Mosley; her consort, Cllr Nigel Manning; and a team of bowlers from the Chelsea Pensioners, at its ground at Sutherland Memorial Park.
The occasion was the formal opening of the club’s refurbished clubhouse, and the celebration of its 30th anniversary, deferred from 2020 because of the pandemic.
The event was hosted by club president Geoff Sheldon and also attended by VIPs including Bowls Surrey president Joe Cable and secretary John Tucker, and Charlotte Emanuel, the president of the Surrey County Women’s Bowling Association.
The club’s sponsors were also well represented and club captain Alan Mogg had a few of them on the green to have a go after the match. Never one to miss a recruitment opportunity!
The temperature was in the high 20s, so we were all grateful for the shade of the marquee which had been erected along the length of the clubhouse.
Cream teas were served and many cold drinks were consumed.
The Chelsea Pensioners were a very friendly and entertaining bunch, and our members will remember the experience for a long time. The result of the match? Who knows, who cares!
A big thank you goes to the committee and those members who gave up their opportunity to play in order to make sure the event was a big success for the club.
