Can You Identify These Locations? (31)

Can you name the street at the foot of the picture?

by David Rose

The three readers who replied to last week’s mystery photos were pretty much spot on.

Featured was the lodge house to Stoke Park Mansion in Stoke Road. It still stands and is between Lido Road and St John’s Church. Many more trees back in the 1900s.

The second photo was the Guildford and Godalming bypass (now the A3) near the junction with Beechcroft Drive. That was in the days when you could do a quick ‘look right and left’ and walk across the carriageway.

Thanks to Caroline Reeves, Ian Plowman and Bernard Parke for their additional comments. Click here to see them.

Bernard mentioned the crash which killed racing driver Mike Hawthorn – also known as the ‘Gay Cavalier” (the old meaning of the word gay) and sometimes known as the “Farnham Flyer”.

To see more on this go to the Pathe News website – a treasure trove of old film clips. Click on to http://www.britishpathe.com/video/mike-hawthorn-killed/query/mike+hawthorn+guildford

On to this week’s two photos. First up (seen above) is another from the ‘views from the air series’ that’s part of my archive collection. Shouldn’t be too difficult to name the road in the foreground.

As for the second (see below) a non-conformist chapel that stll stands. You’ll need to know your back streets and alleyways near Guildford town centre for this one.

If you think you know the locations leave a reply in the box below. Replies will be added to the post in about a week’s time, with the answers confirmed next time around.

Do you know where this chapel is?

[1] Is almost certainly an areial view of a part of the [upper] High Street, with Sydenham Road in the back ground [recognised by Batemans opticians] [2] Not certain but think it might be in Ladymead……?

  2. Nick Blogs says:

The first picture is obviously the top of the High Street. The Clues being the Chelsea Building Society at No 250, and the pathway up through baker’s yard to Sydenham Road.

The second is Bethal Baptist Chapel, GU1 4LP in The Bars, off Leapale Lane.

  3. Ian Plowman says:

The first photo is Upper High Street, the second is of The Bethel Chapel in The Bars which is behind Martyr Road

  4. Bernard Parke says:

The second photograph is of the BETHEL CHAPEL in The Bars off The Stoke Road

  5. David & Ann Bailey says:

The first photo is the upper High Street.
The second is the Bethel Strict Baptist Chapel in The Bars.
