Making strides for Walk to School Week

In March, pupils at St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School in Redhill took part in Feet First: Walking Training, a road safety initiative designed to help children gain the skills they need to walk more safely and confidently in their local area.

The session, delivered to Year 3 pupils by Surrey County Council’s team of trained Walking Instructors, coincided with recent safety improvements made just outside the school. These upgrades – including a new zebra crossing, the removal of parking bays, and a widened footway – are part of a £3 million investment across Surrey to make school journeys safer for children and families.

The improvements are aimed at creating a safer environment that encourages more walking to school, reducing traffic and supporting healthier travel habits. Funding for the Feet First training at St Joseph’s was also supported locally, helping pupils learn how to safely use the new crossing and navigate roads with greater awareness.

Feet First has already made a big impact across Surrey. Since launching in June 2022, the programme has reached over 15,000 children, including more than 6,100 pupils this academic year alone – a 39% year-on-year increase.

The training aligns with national Walk to School Week (May 19-23), where schools are encouraged to promote active, sustainable journeys. By teaching children vital road safety skills at a young age, the programme prepares them for more independent travel in the future.

Ana Silva Louro, a teacher at St Joseph’s, said:

“The Feet First training was easy to arrange, and the instructors were brilliant. The children loved the session and really took on board the importance of road safety. I’d recommend it to any school.”
