The “written off” car that was driven through the barrier on Green Lane.

Police were called last night (January 26, 2019) when a car crashed through a steel barrier in place to prevent through motor traffic using an unmetalled bridleway that leads to the Hog’s Back from The Mount and the town centre.

A nearby resident told The Guildford Dragon NEWS: “We had to call Surrey Police last night. Around 6.45 in the evening, a blue VW Golf, driven by a young man, knocked out six wooden bollards, then continued to drive at high speed into the metal barrier.

“The car appears to be a complete right off. My wife and I confronted the driver but he ran off down towards The Mount when we told him the police had been called. Police officers turned up and said the driver was from Basingstoke. They suspected he was either picking up drugs or selling them.”

The metal barrier removed from its hinges.

The collision took the barrier off its support posts leaving the bridleway open.

The resident continued: “It’s remarkable that no one was killed, the driver could have easily been decapitated and most worrying is that it happened directly outside Henley Fort Education Center for young children.

“We keep reporting incidents to Surrey Police, and the land agents Strutt & Parker for Loseley Park but we are still experiencing these anti-social problems.”

Police tape is all that remains to prevent vehicles driving along the bridleway.

Nearby residents are now calling for Guildford Borough Council to arrange for the car to be removed and a new gate to be erected. They fear the immobilised car will be vandalised or set alight and that without the barrier in place more drug dealers and others showing anti-social behaviour will be able to drive behind Henley Fort Education Centre.

Green Lane has a history as a site for anti-social behaviour and evidence of drugs use has been found.

On Monday (January 28) Surrey Police said: “We received reports of a car smashing through a barrier in The Mount, Guildford, around 6.40pm on Saturday (26 January).

“The driver of a blue Volkswagen Golf left the scene following the collision and enquiries remain ongoing to locate him.”
