A police spokesperson said: “If you do not wish to leave your name, you can call the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

“We are currently seeing a rise in burglaries where jewellery is targeted over electronics and other valuable items. If you keep high-value or sentimental jewellery in your home, please consider the following safety tips:

    • Storing your valuables in a safe that is securely fixed to the ground or wall.
    • Storing any high-value items elsewhere such as in a safety deposit box at the bank.
    • Insuring your jewellery.
    • Making a list of all the jewellery stored in your house with a description of each item and its value.
    • Taking clear photos of all your jewellery against a plain background with a ruler next to them for scale.
    • Taking a few extra minutes to secure your home when you go out, even for a short time.”
