Claire’s Column – New Year, New Start?

In this regular monthly column – a must read for all those interested in Guildford business – Claire Dee reports on career prospects in 2013.

A survey by career advisers AGM Transitions has revealed that a third of UK business decision-makers are looking for a career change in 2013.  More money is the number one incentive, followed by the desire for a new challenge.

January is well known as a busy month for recruiters.  For many people, the new year brings an appetite for a new start and top of the list is often a new job.

Surrey certainly plays its part being one of the country’s biggest and most lucrative employment areas.  Just this week, I learnt that multinational consumer brand Unilever (think Marmite) is relocating an additional chunk of its UK staff from Richmond and West Drayton to its already established headquarters in Leatherhead.

There’s lots of reason to move on, but if it’s a challenge you’re after perhaps staying in your current role is the biggest one of all.  I’m not suggesting you coast or stagnate, I’m suggesting a chat with your boss to say you love working with them but need something new to energise both you and them!  In these austere times (and yes, the experts are already saying 2013 will be another difficult year…) job security is not to be sniffed at.

Every January, I look inside my business and think what’s working, what isn’t and what next?  I have no desire to resign as director of Claire Dee Communications, but I have every desire to refresh and revitalise the company and my role.

You could argue I am also a UK business decision-maker looking for a career change in 2013: one who will stand still and progress at the same time.

Claire Dee runs her own communications consultancy near Guildford and is an active member of the local business community including sitting on the Surrey Chambers of Commerce council.  To learn more visit www.clairedeecommunications.com
