Re-development of the the old “AA Roundabout” site on the London road has created over 30 local tradesman jobs, according to developer, McCarthy & Stone.
It estimates that as work to construct one and two-bedroom assisted living apartments for the over 70s continues further jobs in areas such as plumbing, electrics, dry liners, painters and decorators will follow at the “Clock House” development.
Shaun Simmonds, senior site manager, said: “McCarthy & Stone’s commitment to sourcing its tradesmen from the local work pool provides a welcome boost to the Guildford community.
“The importance of employing the local workforce cannot be underestimated and as the site continues to progress we will be looking to recruit more skilled tradesmen from the surrounding area.”
The apartments will be available to buy off plan from early 2017 with first homeowners expected to move in summer 2017.
Julie Ward, regional sales and marketing director said: “We’re committed to helping older people stay independent for longer while living in a secure, low maintenance apartment with support on hand if required.”

The Aldi shop in Burpham tried recruiting local staff but couldn’t find any.
Claims to be providing local jobs when we have close on full employment is only sales patter, not reality. We have tradesmen arriving from as far afield as Lincolnshire and Wales for a couple of days work in the area. Heaven knows where the tradesmen referred to in the article come from, or where they will sleep, but I would guess they won’t have a GU post code in their originating address.
