Groups and organisations are being offered the chance to take part in The Big Wheel –Spring Into Action, a free community and family event focusing on cycling, walking and healthy living.

The event will take place at Bannisters Field off Egerton Road (near Guildford Tesco store) on Saturday, May 30, from 11am to 5pm.

Groups, organisations and individuals can all help make The Big Wheel – Spring Into Action a fun family day.

It is being organised by the Joining In! project, that supports community development in Westborough and Park Barn, with its co-ordinator David Rose; Guildford Borough Council community warden Tracy James; and volunteer Sheila Willis.

David said: “We are inviting groups, organisations, agencies and individuals who can offer family focused cycling or outdoor health related activities to take part in what promises to be an exciting day’s event.

“We also need volunteers to help organise the event, help to promote it, and be part of it on the day.”

The organisers are holding two public meetings for people interested to hear more about plans for The Big Wheel – Spring into Action. Anyone can go along.

An evening meeting is being held on Monday, February 2, at 7.30pm, at the Park Barn Centre, off Park Barn Drive, Park Barn, Guildford GU2 8EN (don’t confuse it with the community centre in Cabell Road).

A daytime meeting is being held on Thursday, February 5, at 10am at the community room of Kings College, Southway, Park Barn, Guildford GU2 8DU.

At the event itself there will be information stands with lots of advice and giveaways. These will include, for example, cycle routes and places to walk, fitness trails, and so on.

A pictorial history display will feature cycling in the Guildford area – from the Victorians on their penny-farthings to the cycle speedway craze of the 1950s.

There will be fun inflatables and similar attractions for young people.

Local groups, clubs and agencies of all kinds will have the opportunity to have a stand for their own promotions and for sourcing new volunteers. A good selection of healthy refreshment options, music, visual displays and more, will also be on offer.
